There Is Hope | God's Economy

There Is Hope (TIH) is a non-profit ministry based in Lilongwe, Malawi. TIH works in the largest UN refugee camp in Malawi, Dzaleka, located in Dowa District, around 50 kilometers from Lilongwe, the capital city. Dzaleka was established by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in 1994 in response to a surge of forcibly displaced people fleeing genocide, violence and wars in Burundi, Rwanda and the D.R. Congo. Dzaleka Refugee Camp hosts around 28,000 refugees. TIH seeks to eliminate poverty and suffering for refugees simultaneously building self-sufficiency in individuals and families.

TIH was conceived and founded in 2006 by Innocent Magambi, a Burundian national who lived in different refugee camps within Eastern and Southern Africa. Innocent and TIH work in the Dzaleka Refugee Camp alongside churches, individuals, and organizations within the camp.

Current Project

There Is Hope inaugurated its Bible School in May, 2017, which was constructed with funds from God’s Economy. The school is having a huge impact on the spiritual development of its students. Currently there are 55 first year students and 35 second year students enrolled in the school. With the spiritual knowledge that is being imparted to the students through their educational pursuit, students are able to teach and preach the word of God that transcends cultural ideas and traditions, and speak God’s truth into the daily realities of life in the community. Furthermore, these church leaders are able to establish networks for cooperation and unity amongst churches within the refugee camp in and the surrounding communities.

Request

Despite the success stories for the Bible School, some challenges related to the school remain. The school needs teaching materials and a theological library for the students’ use. Books are needed in English, Swahili, and Chichewa languages. Additionally, there is a shortfall in the funding of salaries for the school’s five teachers. We are seeking donations in the amount of $11,314 in order to equip the library and fund staff salaries for the 2018 school year.
